When I read A Poem To My Grandfather, Grandfathers Are Fathers Who Are Grand, I immediately thought of my grandfather who passed away when I was eight years old.

I remember sitting on his knee, swimming in the ocean and playing on the beach, combing his blond wavy hair, and accidentally seeing him in his long underwear…oops! We laughed about that for a long time. The feeling I still experience when I look at his picture is a warm and fuzzy one. He was my Pop Pop.

Also, as I re-read A Poem to My Grandfather, Grandfathers Are Fathers Who Are Grand, I saw my husband…father and grandfather.  His love has always been unselfish, placing his family first above all…He takes the time to share his skills and teach life’s important lessons.  He is husband, father, and grandfather…he is Kaitlin’s Poppy, Emily’s PaPa, and he’ll be Luke’s Pop when he begins to speak.

(Memorial Day, 2016: Update since I wrote this back in 2009…my husband is Poppy to all 5 grandkids with the addition of Dylan and Paityn who arrived 2 years and 5 years later to our son and his lovely wife. Luke was born one month before his uncle was married. Luke and Dylan share the same birth date and Paityn was born the day before her parents’ 5th wedding anniversary! We are very busy grandparents these days with our 5 grandchildren ranging in age from 15 down to 2.)

A Poem to My Grandfather, Grandfathers are Fathers Who Are Grand

The following poem is dedicated to all the wonderful, caring grandfathers in celebration of Father’s Day.

A Poem to My Grandfather

Grandfathers Are Fathers Who Are Grand

Grandfathers are fathers who are grand,
Restoring the sense that our most precious things
Are those that do not change much over time.
No love of childhood is more sublime,
Demanding little, giving on demand,
Far more inclined than most to grant the wings
Allowing us to reach enchanted lands.
Though grandfathers must serve as second fathers,
Helping out with young and restless hearts,
Each has all the patience wisdom brings,
Remembering our passions more than others,
Soothing us with old and well-honed arts.
