Love poem to a husband, partner, or boyfriend serving in the armed forces expressing the loneliness and fear felt by so many loved ones of those bravely serving for freedom.

When I was in college, I wrote a friendship love poem to two friends who were sent to Viet Nam. They later told me, after they were home safe, that their love poem meant a lot to them and was carried with them wherever duty called.

The sadness and life changing events that others experienced at that time touched my heart very deeply. I remember one night a friend invited me out to a local shore bar to hear a favorite band of ours. We were dancing and having a great time. Then I noticed a couple to my left. They wore wedding rings. The wife was dancing in front of her husband who was in a wheel chair. I’ll never forget the look on her face…she was trying to make their night out as normal as possible. My friend knew them. He explained that the husband had lost a leg when serving in Viet Nam. I often wonder how they adjusted to their loss.

Love Poem

While the young man was in Viet Nam, his wife may have written this love poem, I Miss You, to her soldier husband…

I Miss You

As I write this love poem to you…

I count the hours,
I count the days.
How much I miss you,
I count the ways.

I miss your voice,
I miss your touch.
And I miss the face,
That I love so much.

How to describe it,
There is no way.
I walk around,
In a permanent daze.

I long to feel,
Your warm embrace.
And to see a smile,
Upon your face.

I will not sleep,
Won’t close one eye.
Until you’re home,
Safe and alive.

While you’re overseas,
And I’m safe at home.
I think of you out there,
In danger and alone.

This is the life you’ve chosen,
And I can’t change your mind.
You’ve found your inner bravery,
And now I must find mine.

I miss you so much,
To the moon and the stars.
And this feeling will go on,
Until you’re safe in my arms.
