NJ MUSEUMS with Children’s Programs

Air Victory Museum

The Air Victory Museum is home to a number of historic Aircraft, Engines, Uniforms, Vehicles and other memorabilia from the first powered flight on December 17, 1903 to Today. Our volunteers are constantly working on new exhibits and maintaining and preserving our collection of artifacts so that future generations can view, enjoy and learn from them.

A wind tunnel, built under the supervision of the Wright Brothers sits next to a large scale diorama of the historic first flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. A flight suit that was donated by Maj. Fred Stankovich, who flew the Number 2 Skyhawk for the Blue Angels, stands next to our A-4C Skyhawk painted to match his aircraft. Captured German and Japanese technology from World War Two as well as a complete Junkers Jumo 004 Engine occupy a corner of the museum.

As you can see, we have a wide range of artifacts that help tell the story of aviation in the past, the present and for the future. Come and take a look around and catch a glimpse into aviation’s past!

Kids Port is an area designed with our younger visitors in mind. Everything from how an airplane flies to space exploration, all in a hands on environment that’s fun for kids of all ages.

4th of July Family Celebrations

Family Fun in NJ

We’re about to go on our family 4th of July vacation.

We’re going with our family relations…

Down the parkway, down to the Jersey shore.

We couldn’t ask for much more…

Sun (we hope) and lots of warm sand,

Outdoor movies and strike up the band!

Bar-B-Qs, boardwalks and rides, fireworks for all…

Young and old, big and small.

Play and relax, swim and see the sights…

Short as it may be, we’ll have had our family time together

And, be assured, there definitely will be another!

~ by Nana ~

Family Fun in NJ

Since we live only minutes from the beach, we’d often go there to view 4th of July fireworks displays after our family Bar-B-Q. We’ve also made a point every few years to take a special 4th of July mini vacation or a “staycation” where we stayed close to home. This year we’ll be about 60 miles away from home, still in NJ but having a real vacation with our children and grandchildren.

Some of our most memorable 4th of July family fun in NJ celebrations were:

Save with Family Vacation Budgeting Tips

Hi, from Jenkison's Aquarium! Are you planning a family fun vacation with your children and grandchildren this year? With the economy in such a bad way for so many, taking time to plan your vacation and budget is so very important to insure an enjoyable, stress free, family vacation without going deeper in debt.

We’ve rented a bungalow that sleeps 8 for two different weeks this summer so we can spend time with our children and grandchildren. To help keep debt to a minimum, our family fun destination will be a short drive, just under two hours to our family down on the Jersey Shore in Ocean County. Not only will it be easier on our debt, we’ll be less stressed than if we had to worry about catching a flight. We’ll bring favorite movies, books, games, and snacks to help pass the time.

While planning our family fun in NJ vacation, there are some tips that we found that I’d like to share with you to help ensure family fun, minimizing the stress and debt, too:

1. Plan on which you want: to sightsee or spend more time relaxing. We chose the “relaxing” choice. It’s always good to get input from family members who will be vacationing with you as to what they prefer and the activities, too.

2. After you decide the type of family fun vacation, have your children and grandchildren help you research destinations, activities, costs including discounts and coupons. With a better understanding of the costs of lodging and activities beforehand, there will be less arguing over money (and less debt) allowing for more enjoyment. To help with family vacation budgeting, use a budget worksheet.  Vacationing during an off-peak season can save you a lot of money, too. I love ways to lessen vacation debt!

3. According to the Travel Industry Association, shopping is a popular vacation activity. If you find yourself usually shopping while on vacation, develop a separate shopping budget so you won’t find yourself out of money before your family fun vacation is over. (And you won’t have credit card bills waiting for you when you arrive home!)

4.  A bungalow, condo, or suite-type hotel may be more vacation budget friendly since they each include a kitchen. Our bungalow also includes a washer and dryer, an outdoor shower, a grill, and a play area behind the house. There is a small marina across the street where we can rent kayaks. We won’t have to spend much on gas once we get there…everything is within walking distance.

5. You can find more tips for family vacation planning and money management here to help prevent debt problems.

If you find your financial situation strained, consider debt counseling this year to help you work towards eliminating your debt so you’ll be able to plan a nice family vacation next year. Debt counseling helped my niece reduce her credit card debt and manage other debt that she had accumulated. The credit counseling they provided helped guide her through a rough time and got her out from under stressful debt obligations. Now she can, too, enjoy family fun vacations without the worry of accumulating more debt!

Use this Vacation Budget Worksheet for your family fun vacation planning.

Family Fun in NJ

This information was sent to me by Amanda at the New Jersey Marine Science Consortium. The NJMSC is an organization that teaches children throughout NJ about marine and environmental science.

They have an up-coming event, Ocean Fun Days, that I think your kids, grandkids, and school children would enjoy attending. It’s a two day event on May 16 & 17, 11 – 3:00 both days with free admission and free parking. Saturday’s event is held at Island Beach State Park in Seaside (Ocean County), and Sunday’s, out on Sandy Hook (Monmouth County). Enjoy exhibits, classes, nature tours, and children’s activities all about our coastal environment. You’ll have a great family fun time learning the science of our shorelines and how to care for them for years to come.

For more info: http://www.njmsc.org/oceanfunday.html

There will also be a science fair for students in grades 3-4 and 5-6. If you are interested and in Monmouth or Ocean counties, let Amanda know.

Amanda has a bunch of brochures she can mail out, so if you think your school or students would be interested in visiting let her know. It’s also a great family fun in NJ event!

Give the Gift of an Experience

Instead of giving a gift that may last but a short time, give the gift of an experience. It will last a lifetime with the wonderful memories you’ll create together. Give an experience you can share with your grandchildren. The gift of an experience is a great Christmas gift, too…and Jenkinson’s Aquarium is a fun place to visit during the winter school vacation!
On Valentine’s Day we did just that. We took our two granddaughters, ages 3 and 7 1/2, to Jenkinson’s Aquarium on the Boardwalk in Point Pleasant. We had a fun day exploring, watching, and touching, too! Emily and Kaitlin were in awe. Sharks, sting rays, strange looking fish, penguins, seals, mysterious urchins, and a blue lobster, too! Sharks
Throughout Jenkinson’s Aquarium, were small tanks each one just as interesting as the last one. Just past the stairs, we found a couple of alligators and across the way from them, it was feeding time for the penguins. ( Check out the penquin cam.) When you hear the announcement, be sure to get to the penguin display so you get a good view. Penguins
Next, we went up to the second floor of Jenkinson’s Aquarium. We found exotic birds, a Pygmy Marmoset – one of the smallest kinds of monkeys in the world, a variety of underwater specimens, and a touch tank supervised by friendly, knowledgable assistants. Touching a Horseshoe Crab
On the other side of the room, you can watch the seals as they swim and play in their tank. The girls enjoyed watching them swim, turn, sit up, and dive to the bottom and back up again. One of the seals is blind but it doesn’t keep her from having as much fun as the other seals. At 4:00, the seals entertained us while they were fed by their attendants. One rolled over, one dove for toys, and one “sang”.  They each had their teeth brushed, too. The kids all loved it when two of the seals kissed! Kissing Seals
After the seal feeding, we were able to learn more about the sea urchin, star fish, horse shoe crab, and large snail we saw earlier in the touch area. Everyone was welcome to touch each after careful instructions on where and how. Jenkinson's Aquarium
Emily and Kaitlin said the best exhibits were the shark tank and the seal feeding.  It was fun seeing the unusual looking fish, too. There’s a great gift store to pass through as you exit Jenkinson’s Aquarium. You’ll be able to find a large variety of affordable souvenirs. Jenkinson's Aquarium
After our visit, we went across the Boardwalk for pizza. Some of the shops and games were open…and in the Spring, the Jenkinson’s rides will be ready for all to enjoy, too. Jenkinson's Pt Pleasant
