Memorial Day Grilling Recipes

Memorial Day weekend is a holiday that allows us time to pay tribute to those service men and women who gave their lives in the name of freedom. Memorial Day is also a time when we get together with family and friends celebrate the beginning of the summer season with barbecues or picnics in our backyards, parks, or on the beach.

Planning the menu, for me, is about choosing tasty recipes that are easy and fun to prepare and will be enjoyed by both children and adults.  Here are a few suggestions for easy summer holiday grilling recipes:

History of Memorial Day | Memorial Day Poems

HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day is held on the last Monday of the month of May. It is a day to pay tribute to all those who died while in military service of our country. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War. It was called Decoration Day because that day was used to decorate the graves of the Civil War soldiers.

Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971. Today, the meaning of Memorial Day continues with many Americans observing the holiday by visiting cemeteries or memorials to honor military men and women who died in the wars since, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Memorial Day also marks the beginning of summer.

MEMORIAL DAY POEMS

Celebrate Memorial Day with your family by writing a special poem. Write a poem with your children or grandchildren about the meaning of memorial day. I’d love to add their Memorial Day poems here!  Do you have a favorite Memorial Day poem? Please share it with us. I hope you will participate in your local Memorial Day celebration to honor our fallen military men and women. (more…)

Inspirational Poems: Footprints in the Sand

Footprints in the Sand

Footprints in the Sand is an inspirational poem that has given comfort to many people throughout the past seventy-some photo property of NanasCorner.comyears. There is a sad, yet interesting story behind this inspirational poem. The poem below is just one of several versions published by others claiming to be the author since the original was written by Mary Stevenson in 1936. As a young girl, she called upon the Lord through her poems for strength during a troublesome childhood. When she met others who needed inspiration, she gave them a copy of her poem. Not knowing about copyrights, nor able to afford the process if she did, she never thought about protecting her rights. Luckily, one of Mary Stevenson’s handwritten copies was found and, through forensic testing, was proven to be the original version of Footprints in the Sand…but, her story doesn’t end there.

Mary Stevenson’s sad story, her original poem, and more recent developments of her family’s struggle to claim rights to the inspirational poem on her behalf can be found at WowZone and the official Footprints in the Sand website.

One version of Footprints in the Sand can be found here…

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was
walking along the beach with the LORD.
Scenes from his life flashed across the sky
and he noticed two sets of footprints
in the sand. One belonging
to Him and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of His life flashed
before Him, he recalled that at the lowest and
saddest moments of His life there was only
one set of footprints. Dismayed, he asked,
“LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you’d walk with me all the way.
I don’t understand why when i needed you most,
you would leave me.”

The LORD replied, “My precious child, I Love you
and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering
when you saw only one set of footprints…
that was when I carried you.”

Alliteration Games | 6 Games to Learn Alliteration

We enjoy playing alliteration games with our grandchildren during the rides back and froth between our homes which is about 30 minutes without the summer traffic…and that can take up to an hour at the wrong time of the day! So we make the best of it to distract the kids and to refocus them away from videos on the car’s DVD player.  Time goes by so much faster and it gives us a fun way to bond with them. Here are 6 versions of the Alliteration Game…one, Starship Space Spins, can be played only on the computer.  Enjoy entertaining everyone with everything below!

Alliteration Game #1

“I am going on a trip” is a fun literacy game that helps to reinforce the literary device, alliteration, by focusing on the initial sounds. It also helps reinforce memory skills.

Follow these steps to play the “I am going on a trip” game:

  1. Have one person start by saying (or perhaps singing) that they are going on a trip to a particular place. They will take with them some object that starts with the same letter as the place.Example for the letter P:I am going to Paris and I am taking a poodle.
  2. Have the other players take turns adding to the list of objects being taken by thinking of something else that starts with that letter. Example continued: I am going to Paris and I am taking a poodle and a pen.
  3. Continue the game until someone is unable to think of a word or makes a mistake.
  4. Results:  That person then drops out of the game.

  5. Continue until only one person is left after everyone else has dropped out.

Results:  That person is the winner.

Alliteration Game #2

Here is a similar version of  Alliteration Game #1 above. Watch the video…

Alliteration Game #3

BBC – Starship Space Spins

Alliteration Game #4

Alliteration Game Inspired by Thomas Jefferson

Alliteration Game #5

Alliteration Traveling Game: This one can be very funny for children. Find alliteration words for the children’s names. Make them as funny as possible. Or use names of animals. For example, “loud little Louie” or “silly Sammy Snodgrass” or “leaping Larry lizard.” When your child gets the hang of it, they will take off on their own.

Alliteration Game #6

I see something… Look around the room or outside and choose an object, but keep it secret. Say, I see something that starts with a “t”. The others guess everything that starts with a “t” until they find the correct object. Then using alliteration, they have to come up with a phrase about that object. Silly phrases welcome!

Grandmother Funeral Poem 1

(funeral poem read at the British Queen Mother’s funeral)

You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes amnd pray that she’ll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she’s gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Grandmother Funeral Poem 3

Grandmother,
we’ll always remember that special smile,
that caring heart, that warm, embrace,
you always gave us.
You being there for all of us
through good and bad times,
no matter what.
We’ll always remember you, Grandmother,
because there will never be
another one to replace you
in our hearts…
and the love we will always
have for you.

Grandmlother Funeral Poem 4

There was magic in grandmother’s touch,
and sunshine in her smile.
There was love in everything she did
to make our lives worthwhile.
We found both hope and courage
Just by looking in her eyes.
Her laughter was a source of joy,
her words warm and wise.
There was a kindness and compassion
found in her embrace,
And shining down from Heaven above
we see the glow of Grandmother’s face.

Grandmother Funeral Poem 5

Grandmother Funeral Poem to Grandchild

Grandchild, please don’t mourn me
I’m still here, though you don’t see.
I’m right by your side each night and day
And within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I’m always near,
I’m everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I’ll never deaprt
As long as you keep me alive in your heart.

I’ll never wander out of your sight,
I’m the brightest star on a summer night.
I’ll never be beyond your reach,
I’m the warm moist sand when you’re at the beach.

I’m the colorful leaves when Autumn’s around,
And the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I’m the beautiful flowers of which you’re so fond,
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.

I’m the first bright blossom you’ll see in the spring,
The first warm raindrop that April will bring.
I’m the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
And you’ll see that the face in the moon is mine.

When you start thinking there’s no one to love you,
You can talk to Grandma through the Lord above you.
I’ll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees,
And you’ll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I’m the hot salty tears that flow when you weep,
And the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I’m the smile you see on a baby’s face.
Just look for me, Grandchild, I’m every place!
