Grandparents and Grandchildren Together: Read, Write Easter and Spring Poems
Grandparents, together with your grandchildren read these Easter and Spring poems, then write a poem together. Use the poem to create a greeting card. The following Easter and Spring poems were taken from “Side by Side, Poems to Read Together”, collected by Lee Bennett Hopkins.
-
To write a poem with your grandchild,
-
Go outside or look out the window and talk about the signs of Spring that are starting to show.
-
Write down words that your grandchild associates with Easter and Spring.
-
Next, come up with thoughts with each of the words in them.
-
Put your grandchild’s thoughts together and you’ll have a poem.
-
Keep in mind, it doesn’t have to rhyme but try to create a rhythm.
-
-
Together with your grandchild, make a greeting card using your grandchild’s poem.
-
Type the poem in a decorative font and print.
-
Using scrapbooking scissors, cut a decorative edge around the poem and glue to card stock.
-
Add ribbon, lace, and stickers to decorate.
-
Make more than one and let your grandchild send it to favorite friends and family.
-
You can frame the original as a keepsake.

Easter’s Coming by Aileen Fisher
Through the sunshine,
through the shadow,
down the hillside,
down the meadow,
little streams
run bright and merry,
bursting with news they carry,
singing, shouting,
laughing, humming,
“Easter’s coming,
Easter’s coming!”
Spring Again by Karla Kuskin
Spring again
Spring again
Spring again
Isn’t it?
Buds on the branches
A breeze in the blue
And me without mittens
My sweater unbuttoned
A spring full of things
All before me to do.
The Swing by Robert Louis Stevenson
How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!
Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
Rivers and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside-
Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown-
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!
April Rain Song by Langston Hughes
Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head
with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.
The rain makes still pool on the sidewalk.
The rain makes running pools in the gutter.
The rain play a little sleep-song
on our roof at night-
And I love the rain.
Rain by Robert Louis Stevenson
The rain is coming all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrellas here,
and on the ships at sea.
You can publish your grandchild’s poem on Nana’s Corner, just send it to me via email. Include your grandchild’s first name and state or country.
